Schools and their components are designed to meet two goals: the socialization of students to internalize the values needed to play a useful role in society; and the allocation or sorting of students to prepare them to attain an occupational position in society commensurate with their capabilities.
Those whose mental component summary scores were below the 15th centile were proportionately more likely to be women, younger, less educated, not married, non-officers, to have an occupational position other than combat, health care or functional support (such as technical or electrical repair position), and to report current smoking and have a positive CAGE result.
