In order to determine whether the rats showed an immediate preference for any of the compartments (e.g., those in the middle), which might indicate a behavioral ability to distinguish them, dwell times were computed for the 4 different compartments and converted into percentages of the total compartment time (which excluded time in the connecting corridor, which was not analyzed).
