The phrase "an early compilation" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to refer to a collection or gathering of materials or information that was created or assembled at an earlier time.
Example: "The historian referred to an early compilation of documents to support her research on the topic."
Alternatives: "a preliminary collection" or "an initial assembly".
