In huge open-pit or underground operations, large amounts of rock material have to be moved in order to provide shale for surface retorting.
First, urbanization is accompanied by the transporting of large amounts of rock material in the landscape, the introduction of construction rubble, bricks, and other building materials (Jin et al. [2011]).
