The phrase "amount of distress" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing the level or degree of emotional or physical suffering someone is experiencing.
Example: "The amount of distress she felt after the accident was overwhelming, affecting her daily life."
Alternatives: "level of distress" or "degree of distress".
