On the one hand, there is Jackson Pollock's pronouncement "I am nature".
"I am nature," Jackson Pollock said, assigning ego the prime-mover role awarded to deity in the 1900's.
It's an undertone in his famous reply to the German painter and pedagogue Hans Hofmann, who had suggested that he try working from nature: "I am nature".
The fact that Pollock uttered statements like "I am nature" bolstered this sense of the artist as a mythic, uncultivated force.
Presumably for reasons of economy, the discussion about painting from nature that elicited Pollock's famous retort, "I am nature," becomes a conversation with Krasner instead of with Hans Hofmann.
