The phrase "alternative tone" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing different styles or approaches in communication, writing, or music.
Example: "The author decided to adopt an alternative tone in the second half of the book to reflect the protagonist's inner turmoil."
Alternatives: "different tone" or "varied tone".
