It can be used when referring to non-traditional or unconventional sources of data that can be utilized for analysis or research purposes.

However, because of difficulties in sharing and accessing CDRs (mostly due to commercial and privacy concerns)7,56,57, alternative datasets are required in order to quantify and map internal connectivity across continental scales.
