Because it has been reported that Tfam regulates mtDNA copy numbers in mammals and the levels of Tfam correlate with the levels of mtDNA [ 15, 70], our findings that did not show a correlation between Tfam protein expression and mtDNA content raise the possibility that increasing Tfam protein expression may prevent alteration of mtDNA content against oxidative stress in ischemic retina.
Some argue that it is impossible to separate exterior from interior element content because elements from the exterior milieu might bond permanently in hair, whereas alteration of the content of certain elements might occur with time (ATSDR 2001).
