One factor is the increase of 'Timely' and 'Almost' categories and another is the proportion of Alert Levels and eruptions with time (Figures 10 and 11).
We found that there is an increase of the 'Timely' and 'Almost' categories with the increase in the capacity of the monitoring network (Figure 5).
Many 'Missed' and 'Too Late' VALs occurred prior to 2000 while from 2004 onwards most years have higher 'Timely' and 'Almost' categories (in general > 20% ).
One of the clearest trends that we have found is a general increase of 'Timely' and 'Almost' categories with VEI (Figure 3) which could be related to the difference in volcanic precursors and unrest signals for small versus large eruptions.
