The left gonad was split into two subsamples of approximately equal size, and each subsample was placed in a preweighed microcentrifuge tube containing a stainless steel bead and snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen; the anterior half was allocated for metabolomics analysis (to be reported elsewhere) and the posterior half used for RNA extraction.
