The company wants to change how companies manage resources on servers inside the datacenter, based on the open source Mesos project by essentially allowing you to pool the all of the computing resources in a datacenter as a single machine, thereby distributing resources in a much more efficient manner (as the graphic above illustrates).
Smartphones, for all of the computing power and multitudes of sensors they contain, have been, until recently, largely ignorant of context, or where they exist in the relationships between space, time, and people.
"For the first time in the history of computing, all of the computing platforms spoke the same language," said Allan H. Weis, a veteran I.B.M. researcher who played a crucial role in the commercialization effort.
"Intel is committed to contributing its enhancements made to use all of the computing horsepower available to the open source community," said Boyd Davis, vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Software division, in an announcement.
Called Aurasma, the software is based on the company's IDOL pattern recognizer, which has been stripped down to run on an iPhone 4. Requiring all of the computing horsepower the hand-held Apple smartphone can muster, the software makes it possible for the phone to recognize a database of about a half-million objects.

This new service, Amazon says, will allow developers to "build high-fidelity, graphically rich applications that run on a wide variety of devices, start instantly, and have access to all of the compute and storage resources of the AWS Cloud".
