Microsatellites, or short tandem repeats (STRs), are abundant 1 6 bp nucleotide motifs repeated in a tandem fashion in genomes from all classes of organisms, ranging from prokaryotes to eukaryotes [1], [2].
Interestingly there is a high incidence of tetranucleotide motifs (~30%) compared to other classes of microsatellites in our data set.

This suggests that the sample size and number of microsatellties from Data set I may be sufficient to capture the mutation rate variation of the major class of microsatellites at the genomic level.
