One influential proposal assumes that interlocutors align their interpretations by processing language against their "common ground," the set of mutual beliefs and expectations that are shared, and critically, "known to be shared" with their interlocutors (Lewis 1979; Clark and Marshall 1981; Stalnaker 1987).
Given the above issues, I think the authors should align their interpretation with what they have shown (and not shown!).
