From the Latin verb iterare ("to repeat") formed from iterum ("again"), iterate entered English as a participial adjective meaning "done again," recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary from 1471.
While reiterate took hold in common parlance with the meaning "to state something (over and over) again," iterate and iteration retreated to more scholarly corners of the language.
