Furthermore, exogenously added AHL did not affect oscillations by ePop (Figure 1B) or ePop-mini (Figure 1D) but suppressed growth of cells containing ePop-lite, in a dose-dependent manner (Figure 1C).
Although it is possible that white light cycles also include a thermal component, the fact that in our experiments other wavelengths failed to entrain rhythms suggests that photic signalling is able to affect oscillations by itself.
How does moulting affect oscillations?
The observation that deletion of TDH3 and not that of TDH2, affects oscillations could now be explained by the fact that expression of TDH3 contributes around 60% of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity [ 32].
Still, some perturbations do affect oscillations, e.g. the rate constants k9 and k10 of the hypothesized intermediate enzyme IEP, of the Slp1/APC subsystem, which remove the protein complex MPF at the end of mitosis.
Importantly, expression of TDH3 contributes 50-60% of normal glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity [ 32] during exponential growth phase, which we hypothesised could help explain why deletion of TDH3 and not that of TDH2 affects oscillations.
These results suggested that the competition for a regulatory protein among its binding sites on the promoters affects oscillation bifurcation, similar to the effect caused by an increase in the number of decoy sites in a genetic circuit [ 6].
The interface of pathways linking the prefrontal cortex with excitatory and inhibitory systems could alter the balance of excitation and inhibition affecting rhythmic oscillations.
A general conviction shared by ecologists is that trophic interactions (plant-herbivore, predator-prey, or host-parasitoid) are key factors affecting temporal oscillations (regular or irregular) of population numbers [1] [3].
In addition, our model analysis shows that a time delay of the interactions between ion concentrations and growth rate is not an important factor affecting the oscillations at the tip.
