Electrochemical tests were performed in Ringer's solution, both upon immersion in deaerated solution and after long term exposure (400 h) under aeration at open circuit potential (OCP).
This common mechanism could help to override the different hypothesis on lung injury induced by cyclic changes in lung aeration (that is, opening and closing of alveoli versus fluid and foam in airways and alveoli [ 37]).
We do not know whether the major contributor to lung mechanical improvement is the increase in volume itself, or the "quality" of the lung tissue open to aeration, since well-aerated lung tissue, not poorly aerated, has been associated to the mechanical properties of the lung in patients with ARDS [22].
