The writing of Ernest Hemingway affected me a lot; there is something about that simple way of writing without adjectives, where words drop like stones in the sentence.
He uses two adjectives where one would do ("scraggly, patchy", "matted, tangled") and repeats to no purpose: "glide through the flak, slip past all disturbances"; "beneath her skin, her flesh".
Gill's crisp, taut buildings turn flabby under lazy adjectives: where was Hines's editor when he wrote, in consecutive sentences, of a "fetching Gill duplex" and a "particularly winsome feature"?
There is no need to use hyphens with most compound adjectives, where the meaning is clear and unambiguous without: civil rights movement, financial services sector, work inspection powers, etc. Hyphens should, however, be used to form short compound adjectives, eg two-tonne vessel, three-year deal, 19th-century artist.
Devoicing is found most prominently in the future of first conjugation verbs (where the /h/ sound is represented by the letter f) and in the formation of verbal adjectives (where the sound is spelled th).
Avoid adverbs and adjectives where possible.
