Skyler's narrative is choppy, rambling and punctuated by direct-address footnotes in the David Foster Wallace/Dave Eggers/Junot Díaz mode, and Mummy and Daddy emerge as pure monsters, but Ms. Oates retrieves the child victims at the heart of her tale from the tabloid hell to which they've been sentenced.
If it functions (or purports to function) as a viable linguistic operation, it appears somewhere in this juxtaposition-happy assemblage: stage directions, mailing addresses, quotations, footnotes, cross-outs, untranslated foreign-language bons mots -- you get the picture.
And while the overwhelming, exhausting political questions that dominate most films from Israel (including "Beaufort") are not addressed in "Footnote," they are not exactly avoided either.
And their film — for it's hard to separate subject from object — is a dense, organic, dazzling and funny tapestry, making use of varied and subtly colored animation and stop-motion; candid video; playfully verbose direct address; chapters and footnotes and doodles; and suavely chosen music and sonic bridges.

But by the time the book came out, Burma's leaders had tacked sharply away from China, toward the United States, a curveball that is addressed in a footnote.
