To map the sex locus on the genome, we first used a genetic association approach, looking for correlations between sex flower phenotypes and sequence polymorphisms in a panel of diverse wild genotypes from different geographic provenances (Additional file 1).
The PN scheme has some additional advantages: (1) The provenance is transmitted through a side channel of the data packet transmission channel, and therefore no extra data is appended to the packet, which saves energy during transmission; (2) the provenance is protected with respect to both security and secrecy.

Finding dependencies among tasks through provenance queries, without additional support, is not trivial.

The KEs have the additional overhead of maintaining the provenance and metadata that associates the validated rule specification in the collaboration platform to the implemented rule(s) in the RAE.
Accordingly, the miscellaneous category of genes (26) contains an important representation of genes for UDP-glycosyltransferases and glutathione-S-transferases, which are more expressed in the Tamrabta provenance (Fig. 3, Additional file 2: Table S4).
They are useful for providing additional insight into the data, or for keeping provenance information.
The trees sampled in this study with provenances ranging from 59.6°N to 44.0°N (Additional file 1) have been previously described [ 27] and were maintained in a common garden at the University of British Columbia.
This not only provides an irrefutable, traceable digital record, it can have all kinds of additional benefits, like reducing theft and fraud and ensuring provenance.
In the samples analyzed there were higher inter-provenance than intra-provenance variations between microarray results in a multidimensional scaling plot (Additional file 1: Figure S3).
