A regional council engineer, Orlando Sandro, said 80% of Amatrice's old town centre had been destroyed, adding that the foundations of many of the buildings that had not collapsed were so badly weakened they would have to be pulled down.

"We remain hopeful that a safe and effective microbicide will be developed," Dr. Hellmann said, adding that the foundation was still committed to supporting research on microbicides and other prevention methods.
"It is the difference between outsourcing and doing it yourself," he said, adding that the foundation's expenses are below $3,000 a year because it does not do much trading.
Relatively few African-Americans, Hispanics and American Indians work in the earth sciences, Dr. Wagner said, adding that the foundation was working to bring greater diversity to the field.
"The billion people who wake up every day trying to figure out if they have enough food to eat won't be at Davos," Mr. Gates said, adding that the foundation's goal was to cut this number in half by the end of the decade, as calculated by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
"We believe this situation constitutes an unacceptable security risk to the Internet in general and especially to foreigners who use Etisalat's data services when they travel," he wrote, adding that the foundation did not know whether Etisalat had misused its authority yet.
