"Nothing's a done deal until it happens," Mr. Caracappa said, but he added that "the caucus is completely committed to me".
"We unanimously approved an invitation to Darrel," said Senator Craig M. Johnson, a Long Island Democrat, who added that the caucus's last dinner had been on the evening of Mr. Aubertine's victory.
"They have their share of problems coming," said Representative Tom Cole, Republican of Oklahoma, adding that "the mood of the Republican caucus is pretty good".
He added that the Democratic caucus in the Senate "is still looking at other ways in which we can bring that number down a little bit".

RL Miller, chair of the California Democratic party's environmental caucus, added that the Los Angeles and Ventura Democratic party recently passed a resolution she wrote calling on Harris to investigate ExxonMobil.
Last week she told reporters that she "had no idea" that the Texas primary system was "so bizarre" (it's a primary-caucus hybrid), adding that she had "people trying to understand it as we speak".
Although the Freedom Caucus members agreed with her on this point, they refused her request, adding that it wasn't personal.
On top of that, the LGBT caucus has added 200 members since 2008, putting its total at around 550. And, for the first time, the Democratic Party platform includes marriage equality.
