Bill Gates may be one of the world's most famous philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and guest editors, but could he be adding venture capitalist to the list?
Diamond, now 51, was left with the debt-underwriting rump at a time when most European and U.S. banks were going for the sexier side of banking: building up their equity platforms, hiring investment bankers and adding venture capital to their portfolios.

An added benefit: Venture capitalists are betting alongside Harris & Harris.
But, on the question of "value added," most venture capitalists, even among the leading firms, are pretty passive and ineffective when it comes to assisting companies.
"Across all sectors, there's a shift towards proactive recruitment through technology, and Beamery is emerging as the category leader," added Tom Mendoza, venture lead and investment advisor at EQT, in a supporting statement.
And a lot of that sounded like the usual "value-add" venture capital spiel.

According to the survey results, more than 90percentt of U.S. survey respondents, as well as VCs in Europe and Canada, expect the number of venture firms to decrease between now and 2015, while a majority of venture capitalists in China, India and Brazil anticipate adding more venture firms in their respective countries during the same time frame.
The company recently added Telstra Ventures, the investment arm of the Australian telecom giant, Telstra, as a new strategic investor.
