The phrase "acute or ongoing" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe the nature of a condition, situation, or issue, indicating whether it is sharp and intense (acute) or persistent and long-lasting (ongoing).
Example: "The patient is experiencing acute or ongoing pain, which requires further evaluation."
Alternatives: "sharp or persistent" or "intense or continuous".
The diagnostic labels they seek and the opinions they offer are couched in language much more suited to acute injury or ongoing disease than to describe pain persistence, pain-associated limitations or the psychological impact of pain.
