In a statement released at the conclusion of its meeting, the Fed said: "Although growth in output and employment slowed during the first quarter, the Committee continues to expect that, with appropriate policy accommodation, economic activity will expand at a moderate pace".
"Economic activity will expand at a moderate pace and labor market conditions will continue to improve gradually," the Fed said in its policy statement.
But the group said it expected that with "gradual adjustments" to interest rates, "economic activity will expand at a moderate pace" in the U.S. and the labor market would continue to strengthen.
In January 2016, the Fed reported that the federal funds rate would continue to be held at the target rate announced in December, though they confirmed FOMC expectations that economic activity will expand at a moderate rate and labor market indicators will continue to strengthen.
Despite an economic contraction in the first three months of the year, Yellen and other Fed officials expected "economic activity will expand at a moderate pace over the next several years". The sharp first-quarter slowdown "appears to have resulted mostly from transitory factors," she said, echoing economists who largely attributed the contraction to severe weather in much of the country.
