Today, designers are using computers to create "active" systems.
Active systems protect an area with some sort of motion detector.
Another drawback to active systems is that they are easily tripped and often give a false alarms.
More active systems also attempt to prevent the intrusion upon detection in real time.
Passive systems have a lower false-alarm rate than active systems and they can be turned on to protect the house while you are inside.
And although the sensors in active systems can be powered by batteries, the actuators that move the heavy weights cannot be.
Both passive and active systems are described.
The results apply equally to passive or active systems.
