When Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom stepped down earlier this month with only one-third of his payout from eBay, it was clear that Skype fell short of its goals in regards to growing its number of active users, revenues, and gross profits.
The earnout was to be based on specific active user, revenue and gross profit targets that were to be achieved in 2008 and the first half of 2009.
"The first quarter was a strong start to the year with accelerating growth in active buyers, revenue and our core U.S. business," said Devin Wenig, president and CEO of eBay Inc., in a statement.
The company is also adding five to six million new players each month, and daily actives and revenue are doubling month-over-month.
If its user base were that large and active, Yahoo's revenues wouldn't have been shrinking — from $4.7 billion in 2013 to a projected $3.6 billion in 2016, according to estimates from Macquarie Securities.
A different approach to quantify value is to use a relevant business metric, such as revenues, active users, number of customers or number of deals.
