Excluded were patients with a terminal disease, active malignancy, those not independent in daily activities and those referred back to the referring specialist immediately after one visit.
No patient with evidence of active malignancy was studied.
Presence of any active malignancy (other than non-melanoma skin cancer) that required treatment within the last two years 6 6.
Patients who had multiple antithrombotic agents, consciousness disturbance, dysphagia and complications such as pneumonia or active malignancy were excluded (Fig. 1).
Active malignancy has not been shown to be a risk factor for CMV disease in critically ill patients [2, 24, 28].

Clinical characteristics of our cohort resemble existing data; dyspnoea and chest pain were the most common presenting symptoms, active malignancy and immobilisation were the most frequently found risk factors [17, 18].
