The phrase "acquires a character" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used in contexts where something or someone is gaining or developing a particular quality or trait.
Example: "As the story progresses, the protagonist acquires a character that reflects resilience and determination."
Alternatives: "develops a character" or "gains a character trait".
However, interestingly many of these students who thought that the acquired characters are not inherited did say that if organisms in each of the successive generations keep acquiring a character, the acquired character is inherited: the tail-cutting in each generation would "work in the end, given time" (p. 306).
