The quality and the quantity of the isolated nucleic acids were determined using the NanoDrop™ 2000 spectrophotometer (Thermo scientific) and 1% agarose gel electrophoresis (Bio-Rad, South Africa).
The concentrations of organic acids were determined using a high-performance liquid chromatograph system (Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) equipped with a refractive index detector (RID-10A, Shimadzu) and an organic acid analysis column (Aminex HPX-87H; Bio-Rad, Tokyo, Japan).

Plasma free fatty acids were determined using an enzymatic method by an automated kit according to the manufacturer's specifications (Wako Pure Chemical Industries Ltd ,Osaka, Japan).
