It has also been shown that while isolated individual risk factors may not have a significant effect on parent-child attachment, the accumulation of adversity may result in sub-optimal relationship development and insecurity of infant attachment [ 12].
38 In the present study, there was evidence to suggest that Irish cohort members were more likely than the rest of the cohort to experience an accumulation of adversity in childhood and in early adulthood; and that this, to a certain extent, accounted for a greater risk of midlife common mental disorders and poorer self-rated health, compared to the rest of the cohort.
Examining the accumulation of family adversities over several time points rather than just one, and the use of weights on each adversity based on the size of their association with mental health, would also provide a more complete and realistic picture of the influence of family adversity on mental health in young children.
The reason is that in the USA, Europe and other high-income countries, lower socioeconomic status is associated both with poor health-behaviour and with the accumulation of psychosocial adversity [ 10, 11].
Other recent studies show that the risks of going to jail or prison grow over time for persons living in poor neighborhoods, contributing to the accumulation of social and economic adversity for people living in these areas, and depreciating the overall well being of the neighborhood itself.
Considerable theoretical debate has focused on the relationships between the development of mental health problems among youth and the role played by environmental stressors such as acute traumatic events, chronic strain and adversity, accumulation of stressful life events, and daily challenges [ 1- 4].
We know that resilience – or one's ability to 'bounce back' in the face of adversity – can protect an individual from the accumulation of stress due to adverse childhood experiences.
Research suggests that the development of allostatic load might be more influenced by the accumulation of a range of different adversities than by single exposures [ 12, 13] but also that it might be important to take different types of demands into consideration [ 14].
Some of these stressors include acute traumatic events, chronic strain and adversity, and accumulation of stressful life events and daily challenges [ 7].
