GPs sampling was stratified according to their declaration of CAM utilisation categorised in three groups, strict conventional medicine practitioners (CM) who declared themselves never or rarely using homeopathy or CAMs, physicians declaring using CAMs regularly in a mixed practice (Mx), and registered homeopaths who are GPs specialised in homeopathy (Ho).
In accordance with previous studies performed on the same cohort [ 1, 2], and due to the fact that serology results were highly concordant with self declaration; subjects were considered CHIKV + (n = 101) or CHIKV- (n = 302) according to their self declaration.
The cosmetics, containing mineral oil, used in the experimental induction of arthritis, however, still contain mineral oil according to their actual declaration of ingredients.
Such a study design would also avoid the present division of users and non-users merely according to their own declaration, as this step does not guarantee a correct assignment of data to the test and control group, respectively.
