Our molecular analyses indicating different but parallel evolutionary pathways for symbiotic and pathogenic ascoviruses accommodate the recent observation that ichnoviruses are not a monophyletic group [27], but without implying from which ascovirus lineage the apparently different lineages of ichnoviruses originated.
Although this hypothesis does not obviously accommodate the apparent observation of direct interconversion, nevertheless we will present data from Monte Carlo simulations of DNA chain conformations that show that it can quantitatively explain the observed multi-peak structure observed in the data.
Less clear is how theory will accommodate the new observations.
