The phrase "accepted something as" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when indicating that someone has recognized or acknowledged something in a particular way or category.
Example: "She accepted the proposal as a valid solution to the problem."
Alternatives: "recognized something as" or "acknowledged something as".
If that community accepted something as art, whatever its form, then it was art.
