And while Wilmshurst went beyond the normal academic cut-and-thrust of weighing and debating evidence with other scientists, the Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris says libel blight is now threatening even scientists who merely publish the results of their investigations in respected (and peer-reviewed) scientific journals.
"The academic cuts are probably the most severe I've seen," said Edward M. Elmendorf, an assistant secretary of education in the Reagan administration and now a senior vice president at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Yet one of the most common academic cuts has been a reduction in the number of course sections offered -- that is, how many times a class is taught in a given semester or year.

Academic freedom cuts both ways.
The consequences of these gouging cuts to the Golden State's educational system have meant dramatic increases in tuition, staff reductions, faculty hiring freezes, academic program cuts, and the ushering in of a culture of despair and disrepair throughout public schools, community colleges, and universities.
As a result, more than 200 academic jobs were cut last year.
