"Rajiv Goel is a professional who abused the access he had to sensitive corporate secrets to benefit a select few," Preet Bharara, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement.
In this case, it would seem hackers were able to abuse the remote access feature, possibly by exploiting a vulnerability in older versions of the Synology DSM -operating system, to gain access to the devices.
There may also have been a tendency to abuse the rapid access to specialist advice, although most patients still fitted DoH criteria.
