The phrase "absent except for the" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to indicate that something is missing or not present, with the exception of a specific element that is mentioned afterward.
Example: "The room was silent, absent except for the sound of the clock ticking."
Alternatives: "missing apart from the" or "not present except for the".
And, for that matter, what name do we give to this conscious state that looks totally absent, except for the ghostly blinking pixels on a brain imaging machine?
