It was early November when an above-ground support network of more than 50 scientists, cavers, and experts gathered at the site, about 30 miles northwest of Johannesburg, in a wider world heritage site famously known as "the cradle of humankind" for its large deposits of ancient human fossils.
It can carry loads of up to 150kg and was originally funded by DARPA alongside its bigger brother LS3 (above) to provide ground support to infantry troops.
The maze was raised 50 cm above the ground, supported on a wooden frame; it thus had no floor surface.
In addition to the 8 feet (2.4 m) above ground, you will also need about 2 feet (0.6 m) of pipe to drive into the ground; this is the support for the structure and also allows the above ground section to be removed and modified, or swiveled if you like.
