Employers have complained about graduates' lack of English proficiency, and about 80 percent of the workforce has only a high-school level education or lower.
Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK, said the sector recognised complaints from some employers about graduates' skills, and argued that some of this was down to schooling.
The book examined data about graduates of more than two dozen highly selective institutions to demonstrate how affirmative action policies have benefited society as well as individual students.

"Private sector companies in Malaysia continue to complain about graduates' communication skills in general, and English skills in particular, and the government's efforts to raise the level of English expertise are very worthwhile," he said.
