The phrase "able to exist on" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe the capability of something to survive or function based on a particular condition or resource.
Example: "The species is able to exist on a diet that consists primarily of leaves."
Alternatives: "capable of surviving on" or "able to thrive on".
