These findings support prior work attributing age-related cognitive deficits to reduced synapse number (decreased post-synaptic densities) [57], [70], [78], [79] and Ca2+ dyshomeostasis, a key and well-supported hypothesis of neuronal dysfunction with aging [80], [81], [82], [83], [84], [85].
