In summary, we find the loss of fmr1 in zebrafish at most induces very subtle phenotypes that are not readily detectable using light-microscopy and techniques like immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridisation, at least in the strains used in our laboratory.
Mutant sro1 plants exhibit only very subtle phenotypes [ 2].
This is true in general for most genes in the larger gene families, but it is an especially acute problem for the nervous system, where one is often dealing with very subtle phenotypes.
