The standard maternal animal model (AM) produced a very large posterior estimate of direct additive heritability (0.471), along with a smaller posterior estimate of maternal heritability (0.157), and the correlation between direct and maternal effects was strong and negative (−0.734).
In Table 3, we observe a similar pattern for the USA, with very large estimates in early studies, including Hausman (1981), and more modest and comparable elasticities in the recent studies (total hour-wage elasticities ranging between.2 and.4, for instance, in Eissa and Hoynes 2004 or Heim 2007, 2009).
In most cases, this significant bias was not a result of only a few outliers; as the column labeled in Table 2 and the histogram in Figure 4a show, GenCo produced very large estimates of γ for a significant fraction of simulated datasets.
