The phrase "a very good sample" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when describing the quality of a sample, indicating that it meets high standards or expectations.
Example: "After reviewing the data, I can confidently say that this is a very good sample for our research."
Alternatives: "an excellent sample" or "a high-quality sample".
In the sample presented, the Gamma with square-root link model gives a very good fit in the overall sample; even for the small samples where the model converges, this is a reasonable choice based on the statistics we assessed.
