The phrase "a third of the class" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when referring to a specific portion or fraction of a group, in this case, students in a class.
Example: "A third of the class failed the exam, which raised concerns about the teaching methods."
Alternatives: "one-third of the class" or "33% of the class".
Only about a third of the class raised their hands, and then reluctantly.
