The phrase "a supporting course" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used in contexts related to education, training, or any situation where one course or subject aids another.
Example: "In addition to the main curriculum, students are encouraged to take a supporting course to enhance their understanding of the subject matter."
Alternatives: "an auxiliary course" or "a complementary course".
Also, a faculty member who teaches a supporting course for graduate students is both a teacher and a researcher.
