The phrase "a subset of specimens" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when referring to a smaller group that is part of a larger collection of specimens.
Example: "In our research, we focused on a subset of specimens that exhibited unique genetic traits."
Alternatives: "a portion of specimens" or "a selection of specimens".
