The phrase "a subset of modalities" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing a specific group or category that is part of a larger set of modalities.
Example: "In our research, we focused on a subset of modalities that are particularly effective in therapeutic settings."
Alternatives: "a category of modalities" or "a division of modalities".
Keeping this in mind, we developed a framework for authenticating a user efficiently through a subset of available authentication modalities along with their several features (authentication factors) in a time-varying operating environment (devices, media, and surrounding conditions, like light, noise, motion, etc).
