The phrase "a standard distinction" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when referring to a commonly accepted or recognized difference between two or more concepts, categories, or items.
Example: "In philosophy, a standard distinction is often made between the concepts of knowledge and belief."
Alternatives: "a common differentiation" or "a typical distinction".
Its critical inventor, I. A. Richards, goes unmentioned for another fifteen pages or so, where tenor will be lucidly established (à la its inventor), in contradistinction to vehicle as the "subject" of a metaphor (rather than a metonym, a standard distinction since it was made by Roman Jakobson, elsewhere and on this topic an authority for Paterson albeit one with whom he disagrees).
