The phrase "a sort of functioning" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe something that operates in a particular way or has a certain type of functionality, often in a vague or non-specific manner.
Example: "The device is a sort of functioning prototype that demonstrates the basic principles of the technology."
Alternatives: "a type of operation" or "a kind of functionality".
